Consumerism and sustainability
Sustainable production and consumption has been recognized as an integral part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and can be defined as “the use of services and related products, which respond to basic needs and bring a better quality of life while minimizing the use of natural resources and toxic materials as well as the emissions of waste and pollutants over the life cycle of the service or product so as not to jeopardize the needs of further generations”.
Consumerism and sustainability is an umbrella theme that brings together some of the important areas such as meeting human needs, improving the quality of life, increasing the use of renewable energy sources, minimizing waste, rethinking the way we consume and how we impact the environment with our decisions.
Understanding consumer’s behaviour, values, attitudes and preferences is critical to guiding society towards a more sustainable consumption.
Also, how we response to those needs as designers, what materials we use to process and produce, how we transport the goods, are just one of the many important factors that we need to carefully think about.
